Park Bench Artists at the Museum in the Park
5:05pm Thursday 30 September 2010

THE Parkbench artists are holding their first group show at the Museum in the Park throughout the month of October. Founded in 2005, the Gloucestershire-based cooperative comprises six artists - Noela Bewry, Terry Cripps, Marianne Helwig John, Penny Prince, Sue Rae and Maggie Shaw - all of whom are established painters in their own right. The group are trying to recover the value of abstract thinking in art, from time to time reviewing the context within which they work, and reminding themselves where they stand in the larger scheme of the arts. They believe abstraction can be provocative, and viewers should if possible go away with the impression that had they not had the experience of looking at a particular painting they would never have arrived at where they did. The October exhibition in Stroud is all new work which has not been shown before, although each of the artists has exhibited extensively in the past in individual or shared shows both in the Stroud area, nationally and internationally. The title Crossings is an illustration of what the artists have in common; they all describe themselves as starting in a different place than where they end up. The initial idea for a piece, or a series of pieces, develops and changes many times before it “ends up” as the image we see. Starting points can be photos, a walk in the landscape, objects, pieces of music, newspaper headlines - all springboards for ideas. The exhibition is entitled Crossings - an unexpected transformation of ideas into painting, and will be the Museum in the Park, October 3 - 31.
